PRESENTATION #1

Title: “I’m smart, you’re stupid” and other unintended findings from patient user studies. By Joe Jensen

Talk Description: Patients are increasing being asked to self-manage complex drug therapies. To better understand new-start patients in an effort to improve their experience, we interview doctors, nurses and patients, yielding valuable insight into preference, behavior, and potential cognitive challenges. This presentation will cover our findings, plus the basics of marketing (which explains why we do what we do), but more importantly, you’ll hear interesting, funny, and downright head-scratching stories about what we’ve unexpectedly learned about who we all are as humans.

Speaker Bio: Joe Jensen, full-time marketing nerd and part-time professor, is the global head of marketing at Noble, a pharmaceutical product development company that specializes in patient onboarding of self-administered drug therapies for the world’s leading drug companies. Noble has grown 300% since he joined and is currently the 22nd fastest growing company in Central Florida and the 56th fastest growing in the state. Previously, Joe’s worked at Fortune #92 Tech Data Corporation, mobile marketing pioneer NeoMedia Technologies and has run his own marketing consulting agency. Joe has a marketing degree from UF, an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from NSU, and currently teaches Consumer Behavior at NSU.

PRESENTATION #2

Title: “Imperial Impersonator: The Life and Legacy of Joshua Norton I, Emperor of the United States of America” by Jonathan Pamplin

Talk Description: On September 17, 1859, the United States became the world’s strangest empire. On that day, Joshua Norton, a destitute, South Africa-raised Englishman living in his adopted home city of San Francisco, declared himself Emperor of the United States of America. And so he was. Emperor Norton “reigned” for 21 years as a beloved fixture in San Francisco and a minor national icon. In the wake of his death in 1880, he left a funeral cortege of 30,000 people and a legacy that continues to bewilder and inspire. Local writer Jonathan Pamplin, founder of an Emperor Norton-inspired literary group, is here to share that legacy with a talk celebrating one of the most colorful eccentrics in U.S. history. In doing so, he will draw lessons from His Majesty’s life about the nature of art, the power of community, and our fundamental ability to create our own identities.

Speaker Bio: Jonathan Pamplin is a writer, activist, and scattered individual whose dream is to make others’ lives better, however he may do so. A recent graduate from Rollins College with a BA in English and women’s studies, Jonathan has been a volunteer at several local nonprofits and an editor of several local journals and zines, including most recently The Space Anthology, a collection to benefit local DIY arts venue The Space. His new blog for the environmental network IDEAS For Us, “What’s the Big Idea,” spotlights interesting developments in environmentalist thinking and technology every month. He is the founder of The Emperor’s New Prose, a community art group inspired by Emperor Norton and the primary host of IDeclare, a performance series about identity-themed pieces.

PRESENTATION #3

Title: “Under the Eye of All Time: A Narcissist’s Guide to Failing at Math” by Chandra

Talk Description: “These reflections will track how I got into mathematics and how it destroyed my life. While jumping through the erratic portrait of the mathematician as a young man, I’ll bring this through some of my insights on the nature of a question I find deeper than “why?”, some ideas on the nature of mathematics, as well as some more personal things about how I live now and where I want to go. This isn’t really about math, it’s about love, and if I say true enough things here, it will resonate, and you will realize you’re not alone in facing the consequences of your pursuits.”

Speaker Bio: Chandra was born, lives, goes to UCF, and might die someday.
