PRESENTATION #1:
“From HaHa! To A-Ha! Using Humor and Playfulness to Get Great Ideas!” by Gert Garman
Talk Description: This presentation is about creativity, innovation and collaboration. And top tips for getting properly inspired to get unstuck and come up with new ways of thinking to tackle challenges!
Speaker Bio: “Gert” Garman is the Director of the Collaborative Design Center at Valencia College. Previously, she was a Creativity and Innovation Catalyst for Disney Destinations, where she facilitated brainstorming sessions and trained fellow Cast Members in Disney’s Innovation Toy Box for the Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide. Gert has a long history of creating immersive experiences through her work with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and with UCF Alumni and Athletics. She is certified as a facilitator in the Creative Problem Solving (CPS), Think X, Four Sight and Five Faces of Genius processes. She regularly attends and speaks at the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI), Mind Camp and the Florida Creativity Conferences. She graduated from UCF with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism: Advertising/Public Relations.
PRESENTATION #2:
“Vision Therapy: Looking Beyond 20/20” by Jessica Weinstein
Talk Description: What is vision therapy? What is vision, anyway? Most of us answer the questions “What is it?” “Where is it?” and, “Where am I?” visually. Our eyes and brain coordinate to tell us where we are in space, to see details clearly wherever we look, and to avoid the poisoned berry that is just one detail away from edible. “Ok. So, what is vision therapy?” I get this question a lot, especially when I forget to remove my name tag after work. To answer, my talk will frame vision in a context beyond acuity. I will give an overview of the work I do as a vision therapist, some of the disorders VT can treat, and how visual difficulties can impact reading, learning and daily life. Together, we will explore the many aspects that comprise “vision.” Let’s get to know this important sense!
Speaker Bio: Jessica Weinstein works as a vision therapist in East Orlando. One of her favorite aspects of the job is seeing patient’s confidence toward facing new challenges grow. In her spare time, Jessica likes to create stories and art. She is inspired by Orlando’s growing community ethic, and thanks Nerd Nite for being a part of it.
PRESENTATION #3:
“What Women Want, What Women Need: Scientific Evidence That Women Are Indeed Crazy” by Leanne Ellington
Talk Description: More than 99% of male and female genetic coding is exactly the same – – with less than 1% variation between the sexes. But that tiny percentage is EVERYTHING when it comes to what women desire, what they value, and what they deem important at any given moment.
This talk will give you an inside peek at what really impacts a woman’s mood, thought-processes, well-being, behavior, emotions, and desires — a nurture vs. nature perspective of what makes the female brain tick.
Speaker Bio: Leanne Ellington is an author, a mad scientist, a storyteller, an ambidextrous hoolah-hooper, and wholeheartedly believes that peanut butter should become the fifth food group.
Her career was built off the back of her deepest personal struggles, and now she helps women take a brain-based approach to overcoming theirs. The School for Self Care helps women break up with the thoughts that are holding them back and shows them how to get their body, brain, & heart playing on the same team. She also makes a mean batch of chocolate chip cookies.

“Every third Saturday, Nerd Nite hosts “Nerdy Speed Dating” and I just realized that the October event will fall on the same day as the Creative City Project.
Since the Creative City Project only happens one day a year, I refuse to host an event at the exact same time as something that I’m such a huge fan of- so I’m canceling Nerdy Speed Dating (or Nerdy Speed Friend-ing) for the month of October and I encourage every person that is available on the evening of October 17, 2015 to venture to downtown Orlando and enjoy the wonder that is the Creative City Project.”

* Nerdy Speed Friend-ing will return on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Geek Easy *
What is the Creative City Project?
The Creative City Project is birthed out of the belief that artists can change a city for the better by making it a more beautiful, meaningful and interesting place to live. On October 17, 2015 Downtown Orlando comes to life with performances and interactive installations that will provide you with unique unexpected experiences.
What an incredible weekend. Maker Faire Orlando 2015 was the ultimate immersive experience and I’m honored that Nerd Nite was invited to return this year.
Check out photographs of the event below, including a surprise appearance from everyone’s favorite nerdy superhero.
Last night was so awesome. 3 great presentations, a visit from a giant robot, and tons of FREE stuff.
