“The Maiming of Botany” by Emily Dovydaitis
Description: The field of botany has been permanently wounded with common misnomers, so get ready to arm yourself with a little lesson in Botany 101. Prepare to put to rest one of the greatest hot button issues ever known: is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? Ponder the thought, what’s really a nut? Am I a nut? Watch in awe as the world unravels around you upon discovering bananas do not actually grow on trees. Wield yourself with some added knowledge and get ready to impress that cute guy or gal working in the produce section of Whole Foods.
Bio: After spending a month climbing glaciers, getting volcanic sand in her eyes, and hanging out with puffins on the edge of cliffs, Emily Dovydaitis is back and ready to rumble for her second Nerd Nite Talk. She’s currently studying biology and cultural anthropology, so ask her about her undergraduate thesis on public infrastructure and medicinal plant usage in Nepal. Recognize the last name? You might know her as that woman on the news who put 250,000 plastic water bottles in the UCF Reflecting Pond!
